Dry stone walls accompanied by wooden post and wire fencing are a common feature of this sheep-grazed land. The walling stone is local limestone, expertly stacked for it to stand up by itself without further support or any mortar of any kind. Fencing against the wall stops sheep from jumping over or knocking sections down in their attempt to escape these boundaries. It’s easy to ignore the character of some of these wooden posts when the walls are such a dominant feature, but they have endured all the elements too, and no doubt have just as many stories to tell.
